GP90 what is it?? read below…..

Standard Bearer Joe de Zille and Wreath Layer Derek Kennedy will travel to Europe for The Royal British Legion’s Great Pilgrimage 90 taking place 5-9th August 2018

Members of the DOWNS (Deal) Branch of The Royal British Legion are to join thousands on a pilgrimage of Remembrance to World War One battlefield that culminates in a parade and ceremony in Ypres as part of the end of the First World War centenary commemorations this August.

The Royal British Legion event, known as Great Pilgrimage 90 (GP90), takes place between the 5th and 9th of August and will be one of the largest in the charity’s history.

GP90 will mark 90 years since the original Royal British Legion Pilgrimage in 1928, which saw 11,000 World War One veterans and war widows visit the battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium, a decade after the conflict ended.

That Pilgrimage culminated in a march through Ypres to the Commonwealth War Grave Commission’s Menin Gate Memorial for a ceremony to commemorate the launch of The Hundred Days Offensive and in remembrance of those who never returned.

Local Legion members, Joe de Zille and Derek Kennedy will represent the Downs Branch and the local community at the event, as Standard Bearer and wreath layer respectively.

Joe and Derek will tour some of the same battlefields and cemeteries visited by those on the 1928 Pilgrimage, before marching along the original route through Ypres, to the Menin Gate on the 8th August, bearing their branch standard and a wreath.

They will join more than 2,200 other Legion representatives and dignitaries, including Civic and military guests from the UK, Commonwealth and Northern Europe who are taking part. Once at the Menin Gate, Derek will lay a wreath on behalf of the Deal community.

Edward Barkway Chairman of the Downs Branch of The Royal British Legion, comments: “Great Pilgrimage 90 is a unique opportunity for the Legion community to come together and bear our Standards along the same route in Ypres taken 90 years earlier by the veterans and widows of the First World War. The Downs Branch looks forward to proudly representing Deal at the event.”

As local champions of Remembrance, the Downs Branch of The Royal British Legion is looking to work in partnership with their community to bring their unique Remembrance message to the Menin Gate, on their wreath, where it will be displayed in a wreath installation for viewing by the general public until the end of August.

The parade will start at midday and we encourage the public to make the trip across to Ypres for the 8th August and fill the Market Square to watch the parade, Hundred Days Offensive ceremony and then enjoy an afternoon of musical entertainment including The Central Band of the Royal British Legion.                                                                                                                                 If you want to find out more about GP90 or your local Royal British Legion branch, then please visit http://rbldownsbranch.org.uk/ or contact Edward on 07885110384 OR edwarddeal@hotmail.co.uk

Gwen does it again  at the Town Hall Undercroft!

On Saturday 27th May Gwen and her team raised a total of £178 for the Poppy Appeal a very useful sum indeed towards our funds to provide essential welfare work for service, ex service personnel and their family’s.

Well done Gwen and Thank You!

Our Fund Raiser Gwen Bowsher and her team of Amy Cadets, Adam, Alannah, Megan, Molly, Ryan, Sam G & Sam L raised an incredible £260 for Poppy Appeal at Gwen’s Easter Egg Tombola table in Deal High St Precinct on Saturday 1st April. Many thanks indeed for the 60 plus eggs that were very kindly donated by you all.

Gwen & her team of Army Cadets, they are all Youth Members of our Downs Branch. The following comment was found on a Social media site. (Printed as posted)                                           “Today in town there was a tombola to win Easter eggs. My wife had a go so did I for our two little girls. My wife’s come out first straight away for our youngest so she was over joyed! Our eldest didn’t win so we had a few more goes and a few more goes and a few more goes ? still didn’t win ha ha ha. Our eldest was devastated she hadn’t won an egg. So as we walk off a young lad from the stall came running over to give his egg to my eldest. We didn’t accept as I said I’ll go to Pound Land and get her one.
Whoever your parents are they should be so proud of you young man! What a lovely gesture!
Happy Easter everyone!”

Well done who ever you were Soldier!                                                                                                         Edward
